The EARTH Lab (Environmental Applications and Research in Technical Hydrogeosciences) is a research group led by Dr. Ndubuisi Igwebuike, whose work bridges geophysics, groundwater-surface water interaction, and data-driven environmental solutions. The lab’s mission is to develop and apply advanced geophysical, and computational tools to better understand and manage environmental resources, with a core focus on groundwater systems and aquifer behavior. The name EARTH reflects the lab’s holistic approach. Environmental speaks to our commitment to solving challenges related to natural systems, particularly how groundwater interacts with land use and human activity in pursuit of sustainable water solutions. Applications highlight our focus on real-world relevance, where scientific tools and insights are used to tackle pressing issues such as aquifer recharge, contamination, water access, and resource management. Research reflects our commitment to advancing knowledge through rigorous fieldwork, data analysis, modeling, and scientific communication, while fostering a collaborative environment that encourages inquiry and innovation. The word 'Technical' refers to our strength in applying cutting-edge methods, including near-surface geophysics, hydroinformatics, and quantitative modeling, which enable us to generate precise and impactful results. Finally, Hydrogeosciences represents the broad scientific foundation of the lab, integrating hydrogeology, hydrology, geophysics, and environmental geoscience to study subsurface systems and the processes that govern them.
Dr. Ndubuisi Igwebuike is a postdoctoral fellow at the UNESCO Chair Centre in Groundwater, University of the Western Cape. His work focuses on applied groundwater research, where he contributes to several projects and supervises graduate students. He previously held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Boone Pickens School of Geology at Oklahoma State University (USA), where he was involved in several research projects, including a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-funded study on groundwater recharge.
He is a registered Geoscientist-in-Training (GIT) with the Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (PGO) in Canada. He is also an active member of several professional organizations, including the Geological Society of America, the International Association of Hydrogeologists (USA and Canada), the American Geophysical Union, and the National Ground Water Association.
